Water-rights flow to slow

The State Engineer closed Tooele Valley to all new applications for water rights in 1996. Since then, the only way to get a new water right has been to buy an existing right. Now the State Engineer is proposing limiting where you can move the point of diversion of a water right -- the place where the water is removed from its natural flow, such as a well. The new proposal would restrict the eastward movement of points of diversion for water rights in the Tooele Valley -- a move designed to make sure water rights and the actual water they back up correspond.

Stockton redevelopers go back to the future

Two men are looking to give Stockton's sleepy downtown area a massive makeover that will recapture its colorful past as a pioneer settlement and mining boomtown. Ron and Mike Holmes, an uncle-nephew team who run a Magna-based company specializing in industrial construction, plan to open a boutique, social hall, and museum on Stockton's old downtown strip. Their first redevelopment venture was the conversion of the old Valley Lounge bar into the Stockton Miner's Cafe, which opened last week. The 139-seat restaurant features memorabilia from the town's rough-and-tumble mining past.

“This year, given my condition, I’ll probably be sitting around with my feet up all day,” Spearman said of her Mother’s Day plans. In their family, they have a tradition of calling all of the mothers, aunts and grandmas in the family and telling them how much they are appreciated. Because her children are still young, they draw pictures and make cards for her each year. But, Spearman sees Mother’s Day as any other day.

New GHS coach seeks to energize program

Grantsville High School's new basketball coach will not need much time learning about potential players at the school. Shane Heath already has spent four years coaching junior varsity and freshmen basketball teams for the Cowboys. Grantsville High officials named Heath the new varsity basketball coach last week after looking through 13 applications and interviewing about six candidates.
