The head judge of the 3rd District Court in Utah says many judges don't want to work in Tooele because a posting in the town means being the only judge handling a large, and at times complex, calendar of both civil and criminal cases.

When former Tooele Mayor Bob Swan passed away in February, Dan Tuttle stepped up to the plate on Capitol Hill as Tooele County's lone local lobbyist, keeping track of bills that could impact the county. His work pinch hitting in the middle of the session impressed county commissioners enough to give him the job permanently last week.

'Young @ Heart' breaks the mold for documentaries

At first I thought a documentary about elderly people singing "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones wouldn't turn out so well. But after realizing Young @ Heart was an actual chorus that met regularly and had some talent, I didn't think it would be so bad. Now, I know it's the best documentary I have seen all year -- although there haven't been many -- and is a really great movie all around.

The lobby and hallways at the school district office were filled with examples of students' work. There were cedar chests, chess boards, bed frames, signs done in metalwork, food, computers, diagrams on how to draw blood, business plans, marketing displays, and much more.

However, Grantsville native Dave Lawrence Jr. has not only written a history on the sheepcamps that roamed the Tooele valley from 1871 to 1970, but also obtained a sheepcamp and restored it.

Water-rights flow to slow

The State Engineer closed Tooele Valley to all new applications for water rights in 1996. Since then, the only way to get a new water right has been to buy an existing right. Now the State Engineer is proposing limiting where you can move the point of diversion of a water right -- the place where the water is removed from its natural flow, such as a well.

Rapid dismantling of Stockton Bar still kicking up dust

Take one look at the Stockton Bar these days and it's apparent that the natural barrier between Rush Valley and Tooele Valley is disappearing at a rapid rate. Gravel pit operations on both sides of the bar -- a set of gravel and sand ridges formed by Lake Bonneville -- have been busy digging away at its edges, leaving residents still complaining about dust and brown haze looming over the town.

Sweet, folk melodies mixed with basic harmonies will drift through the air on May 9 and 10 when the Orchestra and Chorus of Sandy City and the Pioneer Valley Chorale, based in the Tooele valley, join forces to perform Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana," a cantata based on 13th century German poetry.
