With the Region 6 basketball season nearing its halfway mark, the Stansbury girls were looking to break even against East at home Tuesday night.
The Stallions leveled their region record to 3-3 and for the most part got their points from the foul line. Stansbury shot 28-of-38 from the charity stripe to hold on for a 55-49 victory.
East did make the game interesting in the third quarter. After trailing by 12 at halftime, the Leopards out-scored the Stallions 22-13 to make the game exciting but Marissa Robbins’ 17 second-half points helped Stansbury hold on for the win.
“We had a great first half. I was very proud of our girls for starting the game so well,” said Stansbury coach Kenzie Newton. “At halftime I stressed to take it to them in the second half, don’t allow them to think they have a chance. Funny it seemed they heard the complete opposite. We are just learning what it takes to win.”
Robbins topped the Stallions in scoring with 24 but was also helped by Kendal Levine in double figures with 10 points. Stansbury did have balanced scoring with eight players getting on the scoreboard.
“I love to see everyone involved in the offense. It not only brings confidence in teammates, but also momentum and spark on the defensive end,” Newton said.
Stansbury dominated the first half and it all started in the first quarter. After Alicia Lutui scored the opening bucket of the game for East it was all Stallions. Stansbury scored eight straight points with half of those points coming from the free throw line for a 8-2 lead early.
Hannah Allred led the way in the first quarter by scoring five points by earning position down low and drawing shooting fouls. Stansbury also ended the first with five straight points after a 3-pointer by Erika Alvey and two free throws by Sharon Lyman for a 15-6 lead after one.
East started playing better in the second and with back to back baskets by Lutui and Laura Kruse, East cut the Stansbury lead down to 20-15 with 3:04 left in the second.
Stansbury responded with a 9-2 run to end the quarter that was sparked by a jump shot near the baseline for Lyman. In a quarter that saw seven Stallions score in the second quarter alone the balance helped them to a 29-17 halftime lead.
Using their size to their advantage, East came out and hit the offensive boards that allowed them to go on a run. East’s Whitney Jenkins added two baskets to a 12-2 run for the Leopards that cut the Stansbury lead down to 31-29 with 5:31 left in the third.
Stansbury even lost their lead after two consecutive 3-pointers by Shannon Bailey which gave East a 37-34 lead. That is where Robbins took over and scored six points in the final 2:06 of the third to boost the Stallions back into a 42-39 lead.
East grabbed the lead back in the fourth after a leaning jump shot by Arreonte Lee to give the Leopards a 45-44 advantage. That is when Levine and Robbins teamed up to will the Stallions to victory.
Levine started it all by making five straight points including a driving layup and free throw for a 3-point play and then Robbins followed with four straight points for a 53-45 lead with only 46.6 seconds left in the game.
Levine and Robbins effectively sealed the game for Stansbury to help them break even at 3-3 in region.
Stansbury will host Tooele Friday for their second meeting of the season at 5:15 p.m.
