In the midst of a nationwide recession, Tooele County got a major shot in the arm yesterday as global manufacturing giant Reckitt Benckiser broke ground on a massive distribution center near Miller Motorsports Park that’s expected to create 100 new jobs.
The new $35 million facility will be 600,000 square feet. It will be used to distribute Reckitt Benckiser’s line of home, health, and personal care products — brands such as Lysol, Resolve, French’s Mustard, Woolite, and Clearasil — to markets in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. The plant will initially employ 100 people — 60 full-time employees with benefits and 40 part-time employees — as part of a development agreement with the county, according to Nicole Cline, Tooele County Economic Development Director.
“This will be a good clean business for the county,” said Tooele County Commissioner Jerry Hurst. “With Reckitt Benckiser as the anchor business here at the Miller Motorsports Business Park, we should be able to attract more businesses to the county.”
Construction on the building has already started and the center is expected to begin operation in the first quarter of 2010. The design of the building allows for 220,000 square feet of additional space for future expansion.
The new facility will replace an existing logistics center in Phoenix, Ariz.
“An extensive study of our supply chain indicated that distribution from this area would enhance our financial results,” said Brad Newman, director of supply services for Reckitt Benckiser North America. “Our study also showed a ready supply of a quality workforce in the Tooele area.”
Bringing Reckitt Benckiser to the Tooele area was a cooperative effort, according to Cline.
County officials worked with other taxing entities, including the Tooele County School District, to create a Community Development Area to provide Reckitt Benckiser with $4 million tax incentive over 15 years. This is on top of a $1.9 million, 10-year state tax incentive. Grantsville City is providing water for the site and Tooele City will be providing sewer service, Cline said.
Reckitt-Benckiser will be the first tenant in the Miller Motorsports Business Park, which encompasses nearly 900 acres.
