Grantsville High’s tennis program has had a tradition of being one of the most constant and annual net powers in the state of Utah, regardless of classification.
So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the Cowgirl net program swept its first match of the season against a higher class division team.
Grantsville registered an impressive preseason triumph over Class 5A foe Lehi to begin the 2008 girls tennis campaign in style.
The Cowgirls opened their season last Thursday at home against the Lehi Pioneers with a 5-0 whitewash.
Cowgirl Coach Pat Ciervo was happy with his team’s strong start.
“We had a great match,” Ciervo said. “We really played really well against Lehi.”
The G-ville netters will hit the road this week against two other 4A teams. The Cowgirls will take on Box Elder on Tuesday and Highland on Thursday.

The Cowgirls dominated the Class 5A Lady Pioneers Thursday in the program’s home opener at GHS.
Emma Gallup cruised her way to a 6-2, 6-2 finish at first singles, while Mandy Cummings won by default after her opponent forfeited due to an illness. Lindsey Dalton earned a 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles.
In doubles action it was more of the same. Melissa Fillmore and Lindsey Sullivan fought to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 triumph at first doubles. And the Cowgirls second doubles squad of Breanne Bevan and Caitlyn Weber combined forces to register a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The JV team also garnered a 5-0 whitewash against Lehi. Autumn Neumann posted an 8-3 win at first singles, while Presley Hall seized an 8-5 triumph at second singles and Courtnee Cloward fought to a decisive 9-8 (8-6) victory.
Lora Reed and Rachael Clark swept the competition with an 8-1 win at JV first doubles, while Stephania Neumann and Chelsee Dalton posted an 8-6 triumph at second doubles.
