The Mustangs had four girls score in double figures, led by 15 points from Shelsea Wall. Chantre Stokes followed with 12 of her own while Kylee Morse and Lindsey Kimler each added 11 points in the win.
The way the game started for Dugway, it didn’t appear that Wasatch Academy had a prayer of winning. Morse, Kimler and Stokes each scored four points to bolster the Mustangs out to an early 12-0 lead.
Instead of continuing their onslaught, Dugway let their guard down slightly against the visiting Tigers.
Alyssa Miller came off the bench for Wasatch Academy and nailed two 3-pointers to bring the Tigers back in the game with a 10-1 run, Miller’s final 3-pointer came as the buzzer sounded, or soon thereafter, to cut the Dugway lead to 13-10 after the first.
Wasatch Academy came out in the second quarter more physical and sent Dugway to the foul line. At one point in the second, the Mustangs shot 10 consecutive free throws, but they made only 5-of-10. Free throws continued to hinder Dugway’s efforts in the second but they still expanded their lead to 28-20 at halftime.
“Some days we shoot free throws great and other days, like today we don’t,” said Dugway head coach Brett Andrus.
In the second half, Dugway came out exactly like they started the game. This time however, they finished the job and didn’t let Wasatch Academy back in the game.
“We came out running on them in the second half,” Andrus said. “If we can get some fast-breaks then that plays to our strength.”
Wall came up huge for the Mustangs in the third quarter. Even with the taller Erica Young guarding her most of the time, Wall kept working down low and poured in 12 points in the quarter. Wall’s teammates followed her example as Kimler and Breanna Nichols each scored four in the period.
Outscoring the visiting Tigers 22-8, Dugway held a 50-28 lead heading into the final quarter.
Stokes came out in the fourth and put the finishing touches on the victory as she scored five early points, including a fast-break layup that she turned into a 3-point play for a 59-28 lead.
From there Dugway just coasted, clearing their bench in the process while holding on to a 31-point victory.
Coach Andrus was pleased with the contributions of his younger players.
“Lindsey (Kimler) and Kylee (Morse) played great,” Andrus said. “We need others to step up and score because Shelsea (Wall) can’t score all of our points, and I thought they did that tonight.”
The win improves Dugway’s record to 2-2 in Region 18. They travel to Eureka on Feb. 3 to face Tintic at 6 p.m.
