Police charge 76-year-old man with fondling, lewdness

The Tooele County Attorney’s Office has filed charges against a Grantsville man accused of sexually abusing several young girls who attended daycare at his home.

The documents, filed in court Tuesday, allege that Grant McNeill, 76, revealed himself inappropriately to three girls — ages three and four — and asked one of the girls to touch him under his clothing.

The girls were interviewed at the Children’s Justice Center in May 2008. They told investigators that this conduct took place over the course of four months.

One victim reported seeing McNeill ask her friend to pull down her pants, according to a probable cause statement.

The daycare, which is operated by McNeill’s wife Karol, doesn’t have an official business name. Tooele County Attorney Doug Hogan doesn’t know how long the couple had been caring for children in their home.

Although other children were cared for at the home, Hogan said his office doesn’t have any reason to believe they were abused as well.

“We don’t have suspicion that the group is any larger than what we charged,” Hogan said.

McNeill was charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child and attempted aggravated sexual abuse of a child — both first-degree felonies — and two counts of lewdness involving a child — a class A misdemeanor.

McNeill is not currently incarcerated due to medical needs that could not be provided for at the jail. Instead he is on informal home confinement. The couple no longer have children in the home, Hogan said.

“The threat was to the kids that were bring brought to the daycare, and he is no longer able to have contact with those kids, so we feel the threat has been lowered considerably,” Hogan said.

McNeill will make his first appearance in court on Feb. 10.

There's a special place in hell waiting for him!!! I don't know if it's good or not that he died before he got his punishment. I feel really bad for the children he abused, I hope they can get some sort of closure now that the monster that ruined their lives is gone. I am glad to know that he'll never again have the chance to hurt anyone.

He died yesterday. How convenient that the Tooele system put this off for over a year and let him die in the comfort of his own home. The lady doing the psychosexual evaluation still hadn't completed it last court date. Why in the hell does it take 9 months to complete an evaluation? She couldn't sit down and make it a priority? It goes to show the priorities in the Tooele Justice System. I hope he gets his, wherever he ends up....in hell!

I noticed that on the Utah State Court Web-site. It says it's for roll call, probably won't do much that day. I just wish they'd get on with it for the sake of these poor children and their parents. I'm sure they're living a nightmare.

When does this pervert go to court again? I assume he's still enjoying the luxury of being at home? What a freekin dirt bag.

My heart breaks for every child and parent this has happened to. I hope justice is served and that some how these poor children and their loved ones can find some sort of peace. I have to say, if this poor excuse for a man is healthy enough to go to 7-11, he is healthy enough to go to jail. And I've read this in several posts, but really, where was Grandma Karol? She definitely should be held partially responsible for this in my eyes!!! Peace to you all!

I can't even describe the pit in my stomach - all though I'm sure that the two of you can relate... It is so heartbreaking and I can't even imagine how horrible that must have been to see your kids like that... Thank you for the info - I will call the children's justice center... I pray that the kids involved do get their justice and you all find the strength to get through this.

Dawna I'm so sorry that you've had to go through this. It also goes through my head everyday how my precious 4 year old sat in the back seat of the car in tears afraid to tell me because I might punish her. I've never felt so much pain and helplessness in my whole life. I actually ran into, "him," at 7-11 and couldn't even breath. I don't want this man to be on the streets. I just think about how my children would've felt if they had been with me that day. And that is my question also. Where was "grandama Karol?" Because she wasn't there on that day I picked my daughters up. The fear in my daughter's eyes that day is something that I hope nobody ever has to go through. These children deserve justice and I will make sure mine get it. My daughter has been in counciling for almost a year and still won't open up completely because of her fear. My children were raised by these people and it breaks my heart. Do we really know how long our children have been affected? I have talked to a woman that says it has been going on for years. So, everyone needs to speak up! Thanks all for your love and support! Taw0823 I would call the children justice center.

Everyone can have their opinion but come on anonymouscitizen. I know what this man/predator did to these children because mine is a victim too. It is fact and there is enough evidence to prove him guilty. Not only did he admit it but this has been going on for a long time. Where were you "Grandma Karol"????? Yes, "grandpa" is a sick man and these kids will find justice, I promise. So, anonymouscitizen your opinion does not mean anything to us, we know the truth. And yes, the kids and I have gone through a lot as well as the others' I am sure! There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about this. Why did this happen??????? I put ALL my trust in them for YEARS!!!! Sick old man…

Yes I do know what they're going through! They are my children! So, I think I would know! Thanks! And you say the article is only saying the worst part! I say the article doesn't even say half of what my children are going through! Children do know how to lie. But my 4 year old daughter didn't know anything like that. Children don't pretend about stuff like that! But you can have your opinion.

I'm not saying that they are liars. I was solely stating that kids do know how to lie. What makes me in denial for stating an opinion? My opinion matters, you have no idea what they went through either so how can you speak for them? If I "had" kids of course I would be infuriated. I can't speak for the children; again I was solely stating that children do know how to lie. You are in denial if you do not believe that children do lie but sometimes their “lies” are "pretend." Think back when you were a child did you not tell a lie? I am just suggesting that there could be many other possibilities that the paper does not print. The paper only wants everyone to know the worst part of the situation, and there might be a lot more to it then is said or let on in the news.

It's people like this anonymous citizen that keep these predators out of prison. You have no idea what these children went through! And its not very likely that all of the kids that told the same story got together and made it up! Grow Up! How would you feel if this was your child in the situation? Believe what you want but the truth has been told and he has admitted to this. These children will have their justice and we'll do what it takes to make sure of it! I think you should look in the mirror before you want to call these kids liars! You're in denial!

I'm not sure what world you people are living but kids do KNOW how to lie! Of course it's only going to tell the worst side of the story. There are ALWAYS two sides to a story and it seems like it is one-sided. All the facts need to be told. If they are going to run a story and print it with little known facts of course people are going to "assume" the worse. Innocent until proven guilty. That is the number one presumption. People would want to give information but how do you know that it is a fact? It could be hearsay and do you think it would be admittable in court? I know as well as everyone else that police coarse in individual to give a confession. In this man's state of mind and condition it could have been easily manipulated. Nobody knows anything about the children or in their own home. Why not try to look into their lifestyles? In today's society children are easily exposed to such things within their own homes.

For those of you doubting Mr. McNeills guilt, go to the Salt Lake Tribunes web site and do a search with the name Grant McNeill. You'll find a story there in which it states Mr. Nice Guy McNeill admitted to the charges in a second interview on May 8, 2008. Come on people, let's hear about how nice he is and all about the people in ALL of the family photos on his wall that support him. Tell us all how ridiculous it is that people are believing these crazy accusations. PUKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't heard, what does the wife have to say about this? Is she saying she didn't know? This whole thing is so sick and wrong and sad for these poor kids! Let's hear more from the people that claim they've known this family their entire lives and this is all just crap. And now that he's admitted to the abuse, do you still think he should be hanging out in the safety of his own home? If you can do the crime you can do the time. Health issues or not!!!

I have to say that I'd like to know what 'welfarecase' knows about this. I didn't grow up in Grantsville and I know nothing about the McNeill Family. I'm assuming they're an upstanding LDS family? A little FYI to all of those going on and on about how nice this man is, NICE MEN DON'T DO THINGS LIKE THIS TO CHILDREN! GET REAL!!

I just read an article in the Salt Lake Tribune that in a court date yesterday, Feb 10, 2009, that Grant McNeill denied the charges in his first interview with authorities, but admitted doing the horrible things to the girls in a second interview on May 8! Nasty old dirt bag!!! Send him to jail, proper health care or not! He certainly didn't worry about these little girls, why should we worry about him?!?! DISGUSTING OLD MAN!!!!! And where was his wife when these things were going on?

Do you know if they are saying it was just to the little girls or were any boys involved??? This article really doesn't do the story justice if he has admitted it and there are more involved than mentioned...
