Miller honored

Larry H. Miller, the owner of Miller Motorsports Park, was named the recipient of the Lee Iacocca Award at the 2008 Mustang Club of America Grand National meet in Park City on Sunday, Aug. 31. The Lee Iacocca Award is given for dedication to excellence in perpetuating an American automotive tradition, and directly benefits The Iacocca Foundation to help find a cure for diabetes. Mr. Iacocca, a longtime automotive executive with Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation, is credited with the creation of the iconic Ford Mustang. He formed the foundation 24 years ago in the memory of his wife, Mary K. Iacocca, who died from complications related to diabetes. Since 1984, the Iacocca Foundation has raised more than $23 million to fund promising diabetes research. Miller, a diabetic himself, was chosen as the recipient by the Mustang Club of America based on his devotion to motorsports and the creation of Miller Motorsports Park, the Ford Racing High Performance Driving School and the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup, as well as his longtime enthusiasm for Ford Mustangs and other Ford vehicles.

Johnson wins race

Jimmie Johnson overpowered the field Sunday night in the NASCAR Pepsi 500 at Auto Club Speedway, grabbing his third victory of the season. The two-time reigning Cup champion was easily the class of the field in the Pepsi 500, leading 227 of the 250 laps on the 2-mile oval. He won the race at the former California Speedway for the second straight year and again gave notice to points leader Kyle Busch and series runner-up Carl Edwards — the two hottest drivers in the series coming into this race — that he remains a serious contender for a third straight title. Runner-up Greg Biffle had the next best car throughout the race, but he couldn’t keep up with Johnson’s No. 48 Chevrolet, finishing more than 2 seconds behind the winner.

Whirling disease

The Utah Division of Wildlife Services reports that whirling disease was found in the northeastern region of the state. Please make sure you clean, dry and sterilize waders, livewells and other fishing gear before venturing to another water. Cleaning fish: Biologists now believe the disposal of fish parts, especially the head and skeleton, is one of the primary reasons whirling disease has spread to new waters. To avoid moving whirling disease and other undesired organisms, you should clean fish at home and send the parts to a landfill. If that isn’t possible, please clean the fish and bury the parts at least 100 yards away from the water’s edge. Do not move fish or fish parts from one water to another.
