There are only three seniors out of 20 players on the Grantsville High School tennis team and the squad is looking to make continual progress through a tough pre-season schedule as it works toward region matches which start on April 14, according to coach Pat Ciervo.
“The next two weeks are going to be tough-going up against great teams like Judge, Hillcrest, Lehi, Box Elder and Spanish Fork. I told the kids we might take our lumps, but the main thing, win or lose, is that we continue to improve as we get ready for our region matches,” Ciervo said.
The coach was extremely pleased with results from last week which included a hard-fought 3-2 victory over a strong Park City team on Wednesday and an easier 4-1 victory over Wasatch in Heber City.
“I was very happy with the way our two doubles teams played against Park City. Each team lost the opening set, but they were willing to play through it and find a way to come back and win. That’s what you like to see as a coach,” Ciervo said.
Grantsville picked up a win at first singles with Brett Peterson downing Kasra Motaghen 7-5, 6-2.
Park City’s Jack Burras went three sets to defeat Grantsville’s George Parkinson at second singles, 3-6, 6-3, 1-6.
The Miners’ John Packham downed Jared Knight 4-6, 1-6 at third singles.
Both doubles matches were three-set battles.
At first doubles, Grantsville’s Dallas Parks and Dan Garrard, downed Jackson Engen and Brett Baggett 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
At second doubles, Grantsville’s Jordan Orgill and Dalan Leonelli defeated Alex Quitovit 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.
Aaron Vera and Dallin Hardy won matches for Grantsville in JV action against Park City.
Wasatch used its top two players as the No. 1 doubles team and they were able to prevail over Parks and Garrard, 1-6, 0-6.
Orgill and Leonelli had to go three sets to win against the Wasps’ number two doubles team 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Grantsville rolled in singles competition while in Heber City. Peterson downed Paul Siggard 6-1, 6-4 at first singles; Parkinson eased past Dallas Hemever 6-2, 6-1; and Knight cruised past Bryson Wolfert 6-1, 6-0.
Dallas Gomez, Vera and Hardy won JV singles matches against the Wasps all by the score of 8-1. Devin Anderson and Ryan Jensen prevailed in the JV first doubles match 9-7 while Zach Garrard and Jaimie McConnel rolled to victory in the JV second doubles match 8-2.
Grantsville is at defending 3A champion Judge Memorial today, hosts Hillcrest on Wednesday and travels to Lehi on Friday. All matches are at 3 p.m.
