With a big boost from the bottom of the batting order, Grantsville softball was able to stay undefeated in region play with a dominating 12-2 victory at home Friday afternoon over Morgan.
Chelsea Dalton and Laura Snow each had two hits in the contest batting out of the eight and nine spots and also drove in three runs in the process. Lindsey Dalton had a strong performance pitching against the Trojans with five solid innings, only allowing two hits and striking out three.
“Lindsey (Dalton) did a great job,” said Grantsville head coach Heidi Heath. “She really picked it up out there.”
Grantsville wasted little time putting runs on the board after Lindsey Dalton mowed through Morgan’s first three hitters. Kelsi Wells and Korryn Coates each reached base with singles setting up runners in scoring position for Lynzie Valdez to bring them in. Valdez did just that with a hard-hit single to the right-center gap bringing around two runs.
Morgan countered in the top of the second thanks to a leadoff double from Whitney Titus. Titus was brought around to score on a bloop RBI single just over the left side of the infield cutting the Cowboy lead to 2-1.
Due in large part to the bottom of the lineup, Grantsville got that run back in the bottom half. Chelsea Dalton got on with a single while Snow followed with a double smacked down the left field line to score Dalton to build a 3-1 lead. The Grantsville offense was so potent that they scored in every inning.
Grantsville loaded up the bases quickly in the third with Coates earning a single, Krista Taylor a double and Valdez earning a walk. With the bases juiced, Lindsey Dalton helped her own pitching cause with an RBI single to right that was followed by a sacrifice fly by Michayla Branin to center to notch a 5-1 lead after three innings.
Morgan scored a run in the top of the fourth on a ground out but the Cowboys took control of the game for good in the bottom half.
Snow led off the fourth with a double and later came around to score on an error. In fact, Grantsville scored their first two runs in the inning off of Morgan errors. Lindsey Dalton roped a double down the left field line scoring Wells and Taylor to make the score 9-2.
Even with four runs already in the inning Grantsville continued to roll. With two runners on base Chelsea Dalton powered a double to the center field fence bringing in two more runs to score. The Cowboys added another run when Snow walked and continued on to second base, allowing Dalton to score from third on the play, giving GHS a commanding 12-2 lead.
With a 10-run lead, Lindsey Dalton only need to get through the fifth inning to seal the win because of the mercy rule. Dalton only gave up a two-out walk and managed to close out the game without any further damage.
“Most of the time, defensively we did a really great job,” Heath said.
Grantsville, now 4-0 in Region 11 after a 16-0 victory over Logan Monday afternoon plays Tooele today and will travel to Ogden to face Ben Lomond on April 15.
