Woolett produces in the hitting department with three triples, a double and nine runs batted in
Strong pitching and timely hitting is all it takes to win baseball games. That is exactly what Dugway had in their white-washing of region foe Tintic in two games with the same score of 10-0 on Friday in Dugway.
Zach James played the part of the dominant pitcher as he had control of all of his pitches, pitching a no-hitter in the first game and only gave up a lead-off single in the second game for one hit in nine innings on the mound.
Dakota Woolett carried the hot bat for the Mustangs as the visiting Miners could not figure out a way to get him out as he went a perfect six-for-six, with three triples, a double and two singles and nine RBIs in both games to lead Dugway in the routs.
Game 1: Dugway 10 — Tintic 0
Dugway was held scoreless in the first inning of the first game against Tintic but it wouldn’t become a trend as the Mustangs quickly found their way on the scoreboard. With a one-out single Woolett maneuvered his way to third and eventually scored on a wild pitch by Tintic starting pitcher Bowdy Steele for the quick 1-0 lead.
After James got done mowing down the Miners in the top of the third, his run support came in the bottom half. Morgan Kartchner started off the scoring with a bloop single over the first baseman’s head to score Jeremiah Kolb to make the Mustang lead 2-0.
Then Dugway got aggressive on the base paths with the suicide squeeze. With Woolett at the plate and Garrett Hensley at third, Woolett faked the bunt while the ball got past catcher Taran Taylor for a Mustang run. With the run already in, Woolett this time really laid down the perfect bunt for the perfectly executed suicide squeeze to notch the Dugway lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fourth Kartchner smacked his second consecutive RBI single and then was followed by a long triple by Woolett that knocked in two more runs as the rout was one. Woolett raced home on a past ball to notch the score at 8-0.
With only two runs need to close out the game with the mercy rule Dugway started off the inning at the bottom of the lineup. After James Dettle got on base Steven Delgado drew a walk and set up base runners for the top of the order to hit in. James helped his own cause with a single to left-center scoring Dettle.
Dugway again went with the risky suicide squeeze play as Kolb laid down a bunt while Delgado raced home and slid into Tintic catcher Taylor as the ball fell out of his glove onto the ground, giving the Mustangs a 10-0 opening game win.
“The middle of the order is improving every day and they had a great hitting day today,” said Dugway coach Jaren Wadsworth. “I think some of our drills are really helping our timely hitting.”
James earned the win with the no-hitter while pitching five strong innings with eight strikeouts and only allowed three walks in the dominating performance.
“Zach (James) was even battling a hamstring injury and pitched really well,” said Wadsworth. “When your pitcher is throwing strikes like that you will be every game.”
Game 2: Dugway 10 — Tintic 0
Tintic wasn’t happy to see James on the mound again but it worked out perfectly for the Mustangs as they worked their bats against a different pitcher.
Dugway started off the game hitting the gaps in the outfield. Hensley nailed a double down the left-field line scoring James but the runs didn’t stop there in the first inning. Woolett again continued his hot hitting with a two-run triple to left-center. Woolett later came around to score on a Jake Palmer ground out to make the game 4-0 before the first inning even ended.
James did allow a hit in the first inning but from there he was near perfect as he shut down the Miners from there on.
An early error for Tintic helped open the flood gates for the Dugway scoring. After Kolb scored on the error Kartchner and Woolett each had RBI base hits to make the score 7-0 after the second.
A rare scoreless inning for the Mustangs was short-lived as they loaded the bases in the fourth and looked to close out the game.
Woolett came to the plate with the bases loaded and smacked a triple that careened of the center field fence, clearing the bases and ending the game with a 10-0 score.
“I am proud of the players at the bottom of the lineup for doing the little things that help the team,” said Wadsworth. “From making catches to supporting their teammates from the bench they prove that it takes 16 players to make things happen instead of just nine.”
The two wins moves the Dugway record to 8-3 on the season with a Friday doubleheader at Wasatch Academy at 2 and 4 p.m.
