Spencer Bouliouris was traveling in the eastbound lanes of the interstate at around 4:05 p.m. when the 2002 Chevy Malibu he was driving drifted off the right side of the road and slammed into a concrete pillar supporting an overpass near the Clive exit.
“He hit that pillar straight on and the car kind of wrapped around the pillar,” said Sgt. Bob Gutierrez, of the Utah Highway Patrol.
Gutierrez said the impact of the crash literally split the car in half and ejected Bouliouris, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt. He was found about 15 feet from the vehicle and pronounced dead on scene.
A witness told officers she had been traveling behind Bouliouris’ vehicle from Wendover and said he wasn’t speeding. Officers also don’t believe illegal drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
“We are still trying to investigate why his vehicle drifted off the road,” Gutierrez said.
Bouliouris’ family told UHP he was taking prescription medication for a medical condition, which Gutierrez said officers are looking into as a possible cause of the accident.
