In response to the letter to the editor “Speed limits need re-assessing” (July 21), I agree with Ty Worthen that our law enforcement officers deserve commendation for the jobs they do to keep our community safe. That is the only part of his letter that warrants merit. The speed limits that he refers to on the roads he calls “arterials” have been studied, and the limits that are in place are there for the safety of motorists, pedestrians, and property owners. Most of the roads are also in school zones and actually warrant slower speed limits. The only potential for danger on these roads is when motorists feel that the speed limit posted does not apply to their desire to get somewhere at a faster rate. Being someone who resides on one of these so-called “arterial roads,” I see the speed limit broken on a consistent basis. Tooele is still a small town. The need to have yellow and white painted lines all over the roads is not necessary. If someone cannot figure out where they should be positioned on a double-wide strip of asphalt, maybe they should have their driving privileges re-evaluated. If someone feels the need to drive faster than the posted 25 mph speed limit on these roads during their commute, they should set their alarm clocks to go off 10 minutes earlier, then commute while enjoying the fact that the hustle and bustle that exists on the other side of the mountains has not become a reality in our community.
