An alleged drunk deer hunter lost control of his vehicle last night on SR-36, causing the camp trailer hitched behind to detach and roll.

According to Trooper Ty Roberts of the Utah Highway Patrol, the Stansbury Park man was driving a Toyota 4Runner with an attached camp trailer in the northbound lanes of SR-36 near 2800 North when he lost control of the vehicle at approximately 8:30 p.m., causing the trailer to whip side to side. The trailer broke away from the 4Runner and rolled onto its roof, coming to a stop in the right lane, according to Trooper Ty Roberts, of the Utah Highway Patrol.

The driver fled the scene in the 4Runner before officers could respond, but witnesses, who had stopped to make sure the man was OK, identified the vehicle and an attempt-to-locate bulletin was quickly issued.

A West Valley police officer, who was on his way to work, pulled over the 4Runner near the SR-138 intersection in Stansbury Park.

Officers found several open containers of alcohol in the 4Runner and proceeded to conduct field sobriety tests. The man was later arrested for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.

Roberts said the cleanup of the accident was extensive because of the debris that scattered when the trailer overturned. Officers called in help from the Utah Department of Transportation to bring in a front-end loader and a dump truck to pick up pieces of trailer off the road. Additionally, three tow trucks were needed to haul pieces of the trailer and the 4Runner away.

“We didn’t get the whole scene cleaned up until about midnight,” Roberts said.

The northbound lanes of traffic were closed and traffic was rerouted to one of the southbound lanes. Both Tooele City police and deputies from the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office responded to help with traffic control.

“The accident definitely took up a lot of resources,” Roberts said.
