Tooele and Stansbury high school football teams are both seeking their first region victories of the season. Both face an uphill battle on Friday with the Buffaloes traveling to Woods Cross to meet the 5-2 Wildcats. Tooele finished 1-5 in Region 7 last year and has had little reprieve this year jumping to Region 6. Coach Ray Groth said Region 6 is stronger top-to-bottom than Region 7, although Region 7 includes 4A powerhouse Timpview. The Stallions will travel to 5-2 Olympus. Stansbury has been unable to score, but have moved the ball well at times. The Stallions have scored only three touchdowns in their last four games. The two Tooele County teams will play their final region game of the season against each other at Tooele High School on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Bulls edge Jazz in London

Rookie James Johnson sank a fade-away jump shot from the baseline at the buzzer Tuesday to give the Chicago Bulls a 102-101 win over the Utah Jazz in an NBA preseason game in London. Johnson, who finished with 18 points, got the rebound after teammate Derrick Byars missed a 3-point attempt from the top of the key. Trailing 81-77 at the start of the fourth, the Jazz took the lead at 86-84 when Paul Milsap drove for a layup and was fouled. He was unable to complete the three-point play. The Jazz, who gave reserve players quality minutes throughout, appeared to be in command when Ronnie Price sank a pair of free throws with 25.4 seconds to go. “We accomplished as much as we could,” Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said of his young team. “Some of them played pretty well.” The game was played before a crowd of 18,689. The NBA was playing in London for the third straight preseason, and commissioner David Stern again noted he would like to have a regular-season game in the British capital before it hosts the 2012 Olympics.

BYU-Washington games

Washington is finally joining the majority of college football and scheduling a lower-division team. The Huskies announced Tuesday they are canceling a future home-and-home football series with BYU and added Eastern Washington, a Football Championship Subdivision team, to their schedule in 2011. It will be the first time in school history the Huskies will play a team from the FCS. Never playing a lower-level team has been a traditional source of pride for Washington and is included in its weekly football notes. But the streak is finally being broken. The Huskies will play Eastern Washington for the first time on Sept. 3, 2011, replacing a games against BYU scheduled to be played in Seattle in 2011 and Provo, Utah, in 2012. Canceling the series does not affect next year when Washington opens its season at BYU.

Pricey tickets

There’s no chance of getting a ticket to the Florida-LSU game on Saturday, unless you want to pay a scalper. Reportedly, tickets being sold now for the matchup of No. 1 Florida and No. 4 LSU are going for as much as $2,200. Tickets for SEC games normally sell for $50, a woman who answered the phone in LSU’s ticket office said Tuesday. “It’s arguably the biggest home game for LSU in half a century,” said LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette. “And there are no tickets around. I turned my phone off so I wouldn’t have to keep telling people I didn’t have any.”
