This is Joe Lee signing off Oct. 14, 2009.

Broadcasting icon, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Joseph C. Lee, passed quietly due of incidents of age, surrounded by family. Joe was 88 years old. Joe was born Nov. 10, 1920 in Tooele. Raised in Tooele, Joe married his high school sweetheart Clarice Bracken on Nov. 14, 1941 in the Salt Lake Temple. Three weeks later while working at his first radio job, he announced the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. During the next four years, Joe served in the Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. Upon his return, he graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in theater and accepted a position in Salt Lake at KDYL radio, moving to KNAK and then to KCPX radio where he was news director for 25 years. At retirement, Joe was honored by Governor Bangerter who proclaimed Joe Lee Day in Utah, an honor he cherished. In 2007, Joe was inducted into the Utah Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame, an honor he was truly humbled by. Joe is survived by sons, Richard Alan Lee (Rosalie), David Bracken Lee (Marilyn, deceased), Vienna, Va.; daughters, Barbara Baldwin, Vienna, Va. and Lizabeth Niederhauser (Steven), Salt Lake City; brother Gordon Lee (Darleen), Provo, Utah. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Raymond and beloved wife and companion Clarice. The great voice is silent, but will never be forgotten. Joe was a kind and gentle man, a true professional who respected his journalistic responsibilities, his colleagues, his friends and always found and tried to bring out the good in all people. A true friend to all, we are going to miss him terribly. Thank you for your example of a life well lived. A viewing was held Sunday, Oct. 18 at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary. Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 19 at the Parleys 3rd Ward, 2615 Stringham Ave. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. www.jdrf.org.
