Keep our canyons clean

Our Cub Scout Den (pack 3203) recently cleaned up a campground in Middle Canyon. We found lots of litter and broken glass. It looked as though someone had a beer party. We would like to encourage the people of Tooele to be responsible campers and help keep our beautiful canyons clean and fun for everyone.

Cleaning up middle canyone or any canyon should not be a chore. I believe this one hundred percent but the reality of this matter is this: people are slobs. People will discard waste everywhere even with adequate trash programs. The cows and cattle ranchers have been there long before Tooele had more than 3 stop lights. This might come as a shock to anyone living here after 1995. Yes Tooele once only had 3 stop lights. So they are not to blame because we have imposed ourselves upon their ways.

What can you do to prevent litter in our canyons? Not much...the increase in daily fees or campground fees will go up according to the trash clean up costs. I think the most important thing is for parents and families to enforce their values and hope the kids respond. Because they are the ones camping on a Saturday night, throwing the parties, and consuming the drinks.

We also camp in Middle Canyon and are disgusted with all kinds of litter, diapers, soda cans, candy wrappers and beer containers. It’s a shame people can’t use the garbage cans provided. We get tired of cleaning up others mess so we can enjoy the experience. The one thing that really makes camping in so many canyons around Tooele is the cow manure. It is like camping in a feed lot, I even had a cow start eating my tent once. They should not be allowed to graze in canyons where camping spots are developed.

This is something that has been one of our families passions for years. I can't even tell you how much trash we have personally hauled out of Settlement and Middle Canyons. My husband Marty Myers spent endless hours picking up the camp sites in Settlement Canyon. I was up there just a couple weeks ago at the dam and could not believe the mess of empty drink bottles. Energy Drinks not beer.
