The Grantsville High School gymnasium will be named in honor of former coach Bob ‘Ace’ Williams on Jan. 12 when the Cowboys play host to Region 11 opponent Ben Lomond. The court-naming ceremony will start at 6:45 p.m., 5 minutes before tip-off of Wednesday’s game.
Grantsville Babe Ruth
The Grantsville Babe Ruth Baseball organization will hold a meeting on Tuesday, Jan 5 at 7 p.m. at the Grantsville Fire Station. Anyone interested in coaching or being a part of the organization this year is invited to attend.
Athletic training
Key Form is now open for enrollment for their Winter Speed Agility Training Program. There are both four-week and eight-week courses offered with both beginning on Jan. 9 at Clarke Johnson Jr. High School with coaches Willie Jaramillo and Rick Smith. The program is open for all athletes between 9 and 18 years of age. The cost is $40 (four weeks) and $80 (eight weeks) per entry. Super league team
A 9U boys super league baseball team is being formed and will start play in April of 2010. To be eligible, players must be 9 or younger on April 30, 2010. The team will be participating in the Rocky Mountain School of Baseball Super League. Tryouts will be the second week of January with time and location to be determined. Coed volleyball
TEAD MWR will host a winter recreational coed volleyball league if enough interest is shown. Contact the MWR office if you are interested or have a team. Play will begin in January and matches will be held on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings with match times at 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Cost is $100 per team. Basketball camp
Carlos Boozer and Andre Kirilenko will hold a basketball camp for children ages 6-17 on Feb. 3-5 at Salt Lake Community College. The camp will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. Jazz lose
Former Jazz player Devin Brown scored a career-high 30 points for the New Orleans Hornets Monday night in a 91-87 victory over the Jazz. It was the third-straight loss for the Utah and fifth loss in the last seven games. The Hornets had lost six in a row to the Jazz before Monday’s game. Deron Williams recorded his 3,000 career assist in the loss. The Jazz host Memphis on Wednesday night.
Honors for Fredette
BYU junior Jimmer Fredette has been named the Mountain West Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for games through Jan. 2. This is the third weekly accolade of the season — and second consecutive after earning the award on Dec. 28 — for Fredette and the fifth of his career overall.
Redskins fire Zorn
Jim Zorn was fired by the Washington Redskins early Monday, the first step in yet another team overhaul under owner Dan Snyder. Zorn was informed of his dismissal shortly after the team returned to Redskins Park following Sunday’s season-ending 23-20 loss at San Diego. Zorn went 12-20 over two seasons, but he lost 18 of his last 24 games after a 6-2 start in 2008. The Redskins struggled early despite a weak schedule this season and finished 4-12, their worst record since 1994.
Wildlife meeting
The next meeting of the Utah Wildlife Board will be held this Wednesday, Jan. 6. Black bear hunting and pursuit recommendations for 2010 are among the items the board is expected to approve at the meeting. A statewide beaver management plan and reconsideration of a recent big game hunting boundary change in Emigration Canyon are also among items on the agenda. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in Salt Lake City at 1594 W. North Temple.
