Eight Stansbury High School wrestlers placed at the Best of the West Tournament in Tooele on Saturday to propel the Stallions to a third-place finish in a meet that featured 16 teams.

Delta A won the meet with seven wrestlers finishing in first place in their respective classifications. Delta A also had 13 wrestlers place overall for a total of 305.5 points. Delta B placed second with 180 points and Stansbury was third with 134 points.

Host Tooele finished in eighth place with 108.5 points with six Buffaloes placing at the meet. Grantsville finished 16th with two wrestlers earning sixth-place individual finishes.

Stansbury coach Jim Burton said he was a bit disappointed on Friday when some of his wrestlers did not advance in the championship bracket, but said his wrestlers battled hard to earn precious points by winning and scoring points through the consolation matches.

“Those eight wrestlers really took that to heart that they could still do well and earn those bonus points with pins and major decisions after the first day and they performed well on Saturday.” Burton said.

Two Stansbury wrestlers finished in second place with Glen Kummer reaching the championship match at 171 and Koleton Kroeger reaching the final match at 189.

Kummer pinned Jake Redman of Tooele in the first round, pinned Aaron Kuttler of East in the second round and won a decision over Jaxon Nielson of Delta B in the semi-finals and lost to Jaxon Singleton in the finals.

Kroeger blasted his way to the finals with three consecutive pins over wrestlers from Grantsville, Kearns and Dixie to reach the finals where he lost to Seth Snow from Orem.

Freshman Zach Coffman of Tooele finished in second place at the meet in the 145-pound class. Coffman defeated Stansbury’s Gus Bustillos by technical fall, recorded a decision over Delta A wrestler Ryan Peterson, and pinned East’s Daylen Bills to reach the championship match. Kaleb Ashworth of Spanish Fork defeated Coffman in the finals 8-2.

Toby Martinez of Stansbury finished in third place at 135. Martinez lost his opening match by decision and came back to win four straight matches for a strong showing at the tournament. In his comeback he pinned two opponents and won two decisions.

Tooele’s Thomas Manning and Joel Spendlove both finished in third place at the tournament. Manning, at 152, started out the tournament with two pins over opponents from Orem and Dixie. He then lost in the third round by decision against eventual champion Braydon Edwards of Delta A. He finished third by winning two matches in the consolation bracket.

Spendlove received a bye to start the tournament and then pinned Kearns’ Jake Ramsey in the third round. Spendlove lost to Delta A wrestler Justin Loe in the semi-finals and dropped to the consolation bracket. Spendlove won a decision over Mason Burbidge of Stansbury and recorded a major decision over Collin Teague of East to finish in third place.

Also placing for Stansbury were Logan Stewart (103) fourth; Kaylen Vickers (119) fourth; Mason Burbidge (215) fifth; Jake Prather (112) sixth and Tyrell Osterud (152) sixth.

Also placing for Tooele were Marcus Westover (285) fourth and Braedon Torgesen (135) fifth.
