Stansbury’s Ms. Do Everything Marissa Robbins scored only two points in the third quarter Tuesday night against Olympus and it didn’t matter.

Instead, guards Kendal Levine and Sharon Lyman knocked down shots nearly every time down the floor to turn a 16-15 Stansbury halftime lead into a 29-20 advantage after three quarters. After dominating the third quarter 13-5, Stansbury withstood some hot shooting from the Titans in the fourth quarter to win the game 42-34.

The victory puts Stansbury in a tie with Olympus for third place in Region 6 with a 5-3 record. On Friday, the Stallions can tie for second place in the region if they can defeat the 6-2 Highland Rams. The Stallions have won four of their last five games.

Stansbury coach Kenzie Newton said she was curious to see how much progress her team had made since the first time they played against Olympus and Highland. Stansbury lost to Olympus by 14 the first time around and to Highland by 13.

“Overall, our team is coming together a lot better with other players besides Marissa getting open shots and becoming more confident in their games,” Newton said.

Tuesday’s game was a good indication of how effective the Stallions can be when they work together as a team.

Levine poured in 17 points and Lyman added 11 including one 3-pointer. Robbins scored 12, hauled in 12 rebounds and blocked three shots. Other members of the team played solid defensively to frustrate the Olympus offense. Stansbury was particularly good swatting away shots with strong interior defense from Robbins, Hannah Allred, Loretta Beaty and Cassidy Christiansen.

Olympus jumped out to a 6-0 advantage and the Stallions were sluggish to start the game. Finally, Robbins blocked a shot and Levine scored on a fast-break basket to break the ice. Lyman added a free throw and the Stallions trailed 6-3 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Stansbury kept it close with a pair of baskets from Robbins and tied the game at 9-9 with Levine scoring again on a fast break. The game was tied 13-13 when Lyman drilled a 3-pointer to push the Stallions ahead 16-13, but Olympus dropped in a bucket in the final minute of the first half to make it 16-15 for Stansbury at intermission.

Levine scored again on a drive and Beaty sank a 15-footer to give the Stallions their largest lead of the game at 20-15 three minutes into the third quarter. Stansbury maintained the 5-point spread at 22-17 when Robbins hit again from the inside on an assist by Allred.

Lyman went to work late in the third period and scored five straight points with a baseline jumper and an old-fashioned 3-point play with a bucket and a foul shot. The strong play from Lyman increased Stansbury’s lead to 27-17 with 1:32 left in the third quarter. Levine added a 17-footer as time wound down in the third quarter to make it 29-20 for the Stallions.

Levine continued to play aggressively to start the fourth quarter on a nifty drive to the hoop with some good ball handling to give the Stallions their biggest lead of the game at 31-20. Olympus called time-out with 7:07 left to devise a plan to get back in the contest.

It appears the plan was to shoot 3-pointers. The Titans hit three 3-points in the next two minutes and sliced Stansbury’s lead to 32-29 with 4:50 left in the game. Robbins went back to work driving hard to the basket for a pair of buckets to give the Stallions some breathing room up 36-29 with 3:20 left in the game.

After another 3-pointer from Olympus, Levine saved the ball from going out of bounds off her team and then connected on a short jumper to make the score 38-32 Stallions.

Stansbury hit four-of-six foul shots in the final 1:21 to keep the lead and ended up hitting a superb 8-of-10 from line for the game. Meanwhile, Olympus did not make any foul shots on seven attempts. Olympus hit six 3-pointer and the Stallions hit one trey. Stansbury scored 17 field goals compared to 14 for the Titans.
