Family Fitness Challenge

Tooele City Family Recreation is sponsoring a family fitness challenge on Monday, May 17 from 7-8 p.m. at England Acres Park (910 N. 400 E., Tooele) for families of all ages. Come learn and try out some fun activities that will help your family stay fit (and you won’t even think of it as exercise)! Every family will receive prizes including free pedometers. 4H Garden Club registration

The Tooele City 4-H Garden Club is holding an annual registration meeting on Thursday, May 20 7 p.m. at Tooele City Hall (90 North Main Street). The Garden Club is for youth kindergarten through 12th grade. There is a $7 registration fee. Come register for this popular program. Space is limited. Dairy Princess pageant

The annual Dairy Princess/Ambassador Pageant is set for June 12. Young women interested in participating can pick up information packets from Cheryl Adams in the County Commission Office at the county building. Scholarships in the amount of $650 will be given to the Princess and the two attendants will receive $350. To be eligible you must be a single (never been married) junior or senior in the 2009-2010 school year at a Tooele County High School, or have a high school diploma or equivalent and be no older than 23, maintain a 3.0 GPA and be willing to promote a healthy lifestyle. Settlement Canyon Irrigation

Settlement Canyon Irrigation shareholders can expect the irrigation water to be turned on Saturday, May 1. Please make sure your valves are open. There will be a weekend restriction in place. No watering is allowed between Thursday 7 p.m. until Monday 7 a.m. Violators of the restriction may be subject to forfeiture of watering privileges. Call 833-9606 with any concerns. HEAT program

The Utah Division of Housing and Community Development says Utah will extend the Home Energy Assistance Target Program application deadline until May 31 or until all funds are spent. Utah has received about $25.4 million in HEAT funds to assist eligible low-income households in meeting their home heating and cooling needs. Car/bike show, pet adoption

A BACA free car and bike show will be held May 15, registration starts at 10 a.m. There will also be a mega super pet adoption from noon to 5 p.m. at Rockstar Pets parking lot, 762 N. Main. For more information call 882-6333.

CRAZE summer adventures

Tooele City and Tooele 4H invite children 6 and older to participate in the CRAZE Summer Adventures this summer. Adventures will take place on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The cost is $10 per adventure. Each week there will be a new adventure in park. Field Trip Fridays

Tooele City and Tooele 4H invite children 8 and older to participate in Field Trip Fridays this summer. Field trips will take place on Fridays from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The cost is $25 per field trip. Arts in the Park

The Tooele City Arts Council invites children of all ages (children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult) to participate in Arts in the Park. Arts in the Park will be held on Thursdays in the morning and afternoons. The cost will be $2-5 depending on project. Junior Golf Clinics

Oquirrh Hills Golf Course will be offering two sessions of Junior Golf Clinics this summer. The first session will be held June 7-11. Youth ages 8-17 can register for the program. The cost is $45 per session, or $80 for both sessions. The cost does include a junior golf shirt. Participants will be introduced to the game of a lifetime. A primary goal is for the student to be exposed to some of the positive values that golfing can provide. Everything the student needs will be provided. Junior Golf League

Oquirrh Hills Golf Course will be sponsoring The Hills Junior Golf League once again this year. Youth ages 8-17 are invited to golf on Tuesday mornings beginning June 15. Tee times will range approximately from 9:30-10:45 a.m. There is a $25 registration fee (includes golf shirt) and $5 weekly fee to golf. Participants will golf nine holes of play on a weekly league, and an 18 hole s of play for the League Championship.. Community appreciation

A free community appreciation event will be held at Deseret Peak on June 25 from 6-10 p.m. Includes dinner, swimming, prizes, and two jump houses for the kids. Grantsville

Rodeo grounds fundraiser

A rodeo jam fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 22 from 1-6 p.m. at the Grantsville Rodeo Grounds Pavilion. The event is to raise funds to help bring rodeos back to Grantsville, for the events and to make the grounds suitable for riders. There will be a band, dancing, kids games, horseshoe tournament and darts tournament.

May Day participants

Join the fun! Looking for those who want to sell or swap their “stuff.” Spring clean your house and garage. Come to Grantsville City Park, May 22, for “A May Day in the Park Swap Meet.” Music and May pole dancing; looking for bands who want to play — get your name out there. Looking for up to 20 groups (four to eight people each) to make up an “olden day” May Pole Dance using a pole with ribbons. Your music, your dance steps, your ribbon, your colors — we have the poles. Grantsville Irrigation

The Grantsville Irrigation system is now on. Residential users are allowed 250,000 gallons per share. We will begin reading meters May 15. Agricultural users have been issued one use-or-lose turn to be used by May 15 as well as two regular turns. If you notice any leaks or abuse please contact the office at 884-3451.

Benson Mill 5K

The inaugural Benson Mill Memorial Day 5K will be held the morning of Memorial Day (May 31) with a start time of 9 a.m. at the Benson Grist Mill, 325 SR-138, Stansbury Park. Cost is $15 per person, $50 for a family of up to five and $10 for additional family members (immediate family only). Online registrants will be charged a $1 processing fee. Awards will be given to the top three in each age group, top three overall and a drawing will be held for all registered runners. Pre-register online or at Premier Athletics at 14 N. Silly shoe parade

Silly Shoe parade will be held on Thursday, May 13 at 4:30 p.m. at Tooele City Library. Children from 5 to 10 wear your favorite home decorated shoes.

Rewards for Reading

The Tooele County Bookmobile Library, Grantsville, is participating in the Utah State Fair, Read and Win Program, open to children who are between the ages 6-12 as of Sept. 1, 2010. All children who return their completed forms will receive a gate entry pass to the 2010 Utah State Fair, a ribbon bookmark, a coupon for a free drink and a coupon for a free Thomas Carnival ride. Bookmobile story time canceled

The Tooele County Bookmobile Library has discontinued the Story Time Program as of April 29. Story Time will resume in September. The Summer Reading Program, with the theme, “Make Waves @ Your Library” will begin on Thursday, June 10 at 4 p.m. in the Grantsville City Hall. Registration will begin on May 27 in the library and on the Bookmobile. Children of all abilities are welcome and the program is free of charge. For more information, call 884-3703.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library bookstore has received several boxes of books which have been “weeded” from the Tooele City Library shelves. Most of them are non-fiction, and there are many biographies, historical collections, etc. We will be selling these books for 50 cents each for the next two weeks. Please come and add to your own library with these special books at this special price.

Summer camp

St. Marguerite Summer School Camp June 7-24 and July 6-8, Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to noon for incoming kindergarten thru 6th grade. Cost is $250. Please contact the school office at 882-0081 if you are interested.

SHS summer school

Stansbury High School is offering summer school sessions to remediate classes or attendance. These sessions will be held Monday through Thursday, starting June 7-22, with two sessions daily: 8-11 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Any 8th–12th grade student has an opportunity to make up classes he/she has failed, raise their D+, D, or D- grades by taking a class & getting a higher grade, or clear up to 24 absences toward NG’s they may have. Students will need to register at their school’s finance office (or SHS’s finance office) by June 1. The cost for summer school is $30 per session (.25 credits or 24 absences).

Stansbury High School is holding a Seniors Academic Awards banquet on Friday, May 21 at 6 p.m. in the SHS cafeteria. Summer food service

The Tooele County School District announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program. Free meals will be made available to all children through age 18 starting June 14 and will run until Aug. 13, except July 5. Breakfast will be served from 8-9 a.m. and lunch from 12-1 p.m. Locations will be at Harris Elementary, 251 North 1st Street, Tooele; Northlake Elementary, 268 N. Coleman St., Tooele; and Wendover High School, 110 Wildcat Blvd., Wendover. Meals will also be available to adults — lunch is $2.85 and breakfast $1.45. Adults are not permitted to eat off children’s trays.

We are attempting to assemble five full sets of yearbooks from the beginning of Tooele High School through 2010. Marriage enhancement classes

The Tooele County Healthy Marriage Coalition is sponsoring these fun, hands-on classes for couples. The series of classes will be held on Fridays and will run May 14, 21. All classes are from 7-9 p.m. at 151 N. Main (Health/Extension Building). Free baby-sitting on-site will be provided. The cost is $20, but is free to those who are income eligible. WIC guidelines are used to determine eligibility. Each couple who attends all five classes will receive a $30 grocery gift card. Couples will receive activity books and other materials. Adult education

Get your high school diploma this year. All classes required for a high school diploma, adult basic education, GED preparation and English as a second language are available. Kindergarten workshop

This Tooele Family Center-PIRC is offering a free six-week workshop for both parent and child. Your child will participate in a preschool introducing skills that are needed for kindergarten while you participate in a class that will give you tips and ideas of how to make your child’s education years successful. TATC free classes

Tooele Applied Technology College is sponsoring monthly mini-lessons at their main campus, I.T. room located at 66 W. Vine Street (the former school board office). The May 19 class is about how to set up a wireless network, June 16th is about useful, free or inexpensive software — put your computer to work for you. July 21 class is PC tune-up and maintenance. The Tooele City Arts Council is excited to announce a new series of photo editing classes. The classes will be held at Tooele City Hall (90 North Main Street) on Thursday, May 13, 20 and 27 from 7-9 p.m. The cost to take the class in $20. Please preregister at Tooele City Hall. Instruction will be based on Adobe Photoshop Elements. You will learn editing basics, how to manage “layers”, crop, enhance photos, and much more. Special Olympics

If you need a haircut, Saturday May 15 is the day to get it done. Please join the local Special Olympics team, the Tooele County Giants at Dollar Cuts in Tooele. They will donate $2 from every haircut to our team. We are in need of earning money to help send four local athletes to our National Games in July and to help with our ongoing competitions.
