Grantsville High School dancers are putting a new spin on a classic Christmas story.
The GHS Dance Company will stage their rendition of “A Christmas Carol” — titled “Scrooge: Jazzed Up Like the Dickens” — for the second time in four years with three evening performances this week.
The timeless tale is set in the modern day, and narrated by Ebenezer Scrooge himself. The story follows Scrooge as he travels through his past, and finds the spirit of Christmas for himself.
Members of the GHS Ballroom team and the high school’s intermediate dance class also help make up the cast of this full-scale production.
Directed by Deanna Hislop and Heidi Done, the dancers began practicing in September, with final auditions held in October.
“Everybody needs to know that this was Deanna’s production,” said Heidi Done, dance teacher and one of the directors of the production. “I just helped a little bit.”
The auditions were only for those who were interested in the lead rolls. Auditions included performing various types of dancing and line reading.
“We really wanted the actors to be able to portray their characters while dancing,” said Done.
Emerging with lead roles from the auditions were Brody “Bubba” Palmer as Ebenezer Scrooge, Dax Levine as Jacob Marley, Jordan Wanberg as Bob Cratchet, Brandon Elkins as Young Scrooge, Cortney Hall as Belle, and Macall Herpich as Tiny Tina.
All of the numbers were choreographed by the dancers involved in the show, Hislop and Done. Some of the numbers include the “Snow Storm Ballet,” where the dancers will perform in point shoes — typical ballet shoes with blocks of wood in them to aid dancing on toes — and “Belle and Young Scrooge,” a lyrical number consisting of lifts and stunts.
Some of the costumes were taken from storage, while the rest were made by Leesa Boman, Deb Hall, Kellie Killpack, and Suzanne Williamson.
“We’ve worked really hard since September,” said Deanna Hislop, GHS dance teacher and director. “We just wanted to bring the spirit of Christmas to everybody.”
The performances will take place at Grantsville High School in the auditorium on Dec. 9-11 at 7 p.m. The cost will be $5 for adults, $4 for students, or $25 for a family of six.
