The Tooele girls ran into a couple of tough teams from Southern Utah this weekend. On Thursday Tooele faced Pine View and only trailed 28-23 at half-time. However, the second half was a different story as the Panthers out-scored the Buffaloes 27-6 in the third quarter en route to a 76-36 victory. Rylee Mulitalo led the Buffs with 15 points while Sharon Lyman added 11 in the loss. Lyman had a big game Saturday against Snow Canyon with 19 points but the Warriors proved too powerful for the Buffaloes. Behind Taylor Barney’s 17 point performance, Snow Canyon jumped out to a 43-14 half-time lead and never looked back. Next up for the Buffaloes is when they open up Region 7 play at Payson on Jan. 6 at 5:15 p.m.
WHS girls basketball
Jennie Bateman led the Wildcats over a stingy Tabiona team with 17 points to lead all scorers. Wendover jumped out to a quick 13-8 lead and finished game with a 40-26 victory on Saturday. Wendover will next play at Altamont on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m.
WHS boys basketball
Wendover boys did not have as much luck Saturday against Tabiona. The Wildcats could not recover from a slow start as they trailed the visiting Tigers 21-2 after the first quarter. Jose Rosales led Wendover with 14 points while Victor DeSantiago finished with 13.
Bulls sweep season series
After losing to the Chicago Bulls on a last-second Larry Hughes shot earlier in the year at EnergySolutions Arena, the Jazz were not able to obtain the split in Chicago over the Bulls. The Jazz lost 106-98 Saturday night in Chicago. Ben Gordon led the Bulls with 26 and Derrick Rose followed with 24.
Boozer still out
Jazz fans looking forward to seeing Carlos Boozer on the floor anytime soon for the Jazz, don’t hold your breath. Boozer, who has missed 17 straight games, is scheduled to visit a specialist in Los Angeles and will miss at least four more games.
First loss for Cougars
BYU basketball had their encounter against 17th ranked Arizona State Sun Devils come down to the last second call. A last-second Charles Abouo tip-in was reviewed by officials and later ruled that the ball was still in Abouo’s hand while the buzzer went off, giving the Sun Devils a 76-75 victory over the Cougars. ASU player of the year candidate led the Sun Devils with 29 points and six assists. Jonathan Tavernari helped pace the Cougars with 24 points.
