After a grueling road trip visiting the top 1A teams in the state, it was a welcome sight to be home for the Dugway girls basketball team.
Dugway hosted Salt Lake Lutheran Thursday night and beat them for the second time this season, 38-29.
Breanna Nichols led all scorers with 12 points and 17 rebounds followed by 10 points and 13 rebounds for Shelsea Wall.
Dugway has been working on their rebounding and are a team focused on not letting any team out-rebound them.
“On our road trip we got out-rebound by bigger teams,” said Dugway head coach Brett Andrus. “We did a better job of that against Salt Lake Lutheran.”
Dugway jumped out to a slim 11-8 advantage after the first quarter and managed to hold off the visiting Lynx the rest of the way.
The Mustangs took advantage of their opportunity to bury Salt Lake Lutheran on their home floor and did not waste it. Out-scoring the Lynx 11-5 in the final period helped secure the nine-point victory.
“We came out strong in this game and wanted to head into the Christmas break with a positive note,” said Andrus.
Lately, opposing defenses have been locking down leading scorer Wall, opening up the opportunity for others players to step up. Thursday night, it was Nichols turn and she did not disappoint.
“Breanna (Nichols) did a great job slashing to the basket and creating scoring opportunities,” said Andrus.
Coach Andrus knows that he has a young team on his hands but knows that they are also getting a hang of the offensive system.
“I just hope they get keep getting better with region play upon us soon,” Andrus said.
Next up for Dugway (3-7) is hosting Ben Lomond on Jan. 2 at 6 p.m.
