Just like they did against Canyon View last week, the Grantsville girls basketball team jumped out big in the first quarter and stunned Lehi on their own court Tuesday night. Lehi recovered somewhat, but Grantsville still cruised to a 71-53 victory.

Sammie Jensen churned out another dominate performance with 29 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Kelsi Wells poured in 10 fourth-quarter points to follow Jensen with 19 points of her own. Possibly the most revealing stat of the game was that Grantsville out-rebounded Lehi 31-9.

It was a balanced attack to start the game as four different Cowboys scored to help Grantsville out to a quick 7-0 lead. Grantsville finished the quarter on a 13-2 run fueled by a 3-pointer each from Jensen and Wells in that stretch to expand the Cowboy lead to 23-8 after the first.

“We are just trying to improve on our offense with every game,” said Grantsville head coach Kenzie Newton. “They broke our press well, so a lot of our offense came from the half-court and it worked out well.”

Lehi had trouble containing the driving ability of Jensen in both the first and second quarters, as she had nine points in each period. Jensen even managed to nail three first-half 3-pointers to add on to her 18 points at the half.

The Pioneers put up a fight on their home court. With just under four minutes remaining in the half and trailing 34-15, Lehi reeled off eight straight points, six of those from Katie Rogers to bring the Pioneers within 11.

Just before half-time Jensen supplied the Cowboys with a more comfortable lead with a fast-break layup and a 3-pointer in the final 45 seconds in the half to head into the locker room with a 39-23 advantage.

Lehi came out looking to be more physical with the Grantsville guards but the Cowboys handled that pressure nicely. Fighting off sickness and coming off the bench, Marissa Robbins provided a spark for GHS as she scored four consecutive points in a 9-2 run to start the third quarter.

An offensive rebound and put back from Ashley Bartlett with five seconds remaining in the third gave the Cowboys a 19-point advantage heading into the final period.

Wells really kicked it into gear in the fourth, as she scored 10 points in the final seven minutes of the game to seal the win. Even the 12 fourth-quarter points from Lehi’s Gabby Granthem was not enough to make the game any closer. In fact, the Pioneers could not get the game any closer than 17-points in the final period.

The Cowboys played well but coach Newton knows there is always room for improvement. “I think the team can work a little bit on their team-building skills,” Newton said. “We are meshing well but there could be a little bit more encouragement within teammates.”

Grantsville (7-2) will hope to keep their winning ways after the Christmas holiday when they travel to Salem Hills on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m.
