Miss Tooele County Pageant
Applications are now being accepted for the Miss Tooele County Scholarship Pageant that is scheduled for July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at Deseret Peak Complex. There will be $3,500 in scholarships awarded. Candidates will be judged on private interview, talent, on stage questions, evening wear, physical fitness and overall composite. Candidates must have a high school diploma, or equivalent and be no older than 23 and must be single and never been married. The deadline for all applications, pictures and paperwork is July 12 at noon. Young women interested in participating this pageant should contact Cheryl Adams, as soon as possible at the County Commission Office during the day by calling 843-3150 , or call her cell at 830-6989.
Food drop
The Utah Food Bank will hold the next drop on Friday, July 9 at Deseret Peak Complex. Please not the following: Sign-ups will start at 7 a.m. and will continue until 10:30 a.m. or until all the food is distributed, whichever comes first. If we have to close sign-up earlier than 10:30, all those already in line and signed up will be served. We keep a running tally of sign-ups to make sure we have enough so please come early. Remember, we volunteers have to get the site clean and cleared before we leave. Carpooling is encouraged, especially for those who have no other transportation. Little Miss Tooele County pageant
The little Miss Tooele County Pageant will be held Saturday, July 31 at 10 a.m. at the Deseret Peak Complex. Girls must be residents of Tooele County to enter. Categories: Tiny Miss for ages 3-6, Little Miss for ages 7-9 and Junior Miss for ages 10-12. If your daughter is interested in being a contestant please visit the Tooele County Fair website, www.tooelefair.com and click on the Little Miss Tooele County link for more information and to download the registration form. 5K run
Stockton Days first 5K run will be Aug. 28. Sign in begins at 6:30 a.m., the run begins at 7 a.m. Run will conclude at Stockton Ball Park with a flag raising ceremony and annual fireman’s fundraiser breakfast. 5K run entry fee $15. Stockton Days will be held Aug. 28 when the festivities will begin with an early breakfast, a fundraiser sponsored by the Stockton Fire Dept. The family carnival begins at 10 a.m. with games, contests, food and fun throughout the day. The Little Mr. and Miss Stockton Pageant will begin at 1 p.m. The Dutch oven cook-off, sanctioned by IDOS, has been cooking all day and will be ready to judge at 2 p.m. Followed by the traditional bingo game, raffle drawing, and potluck dinner in the evening. The Stockton Days festivities will wrap up with a karaoke contest, and youth dance and dance contest with Ron Baum and Dead End Alley Entertainment. Now taking registrations for vendor booths, $30. Erda Days parade
Come join your neighbors and have fun at the Erda Days parade on Saturday, July 17. Doyle and Vicki Taylor will be honored this year as the Grand Marshals. The theme for the parade this year will be Erda Neighbors. The grand prize will be awarded for neighborhood involvement as well as creativity. The more neighbors you involve the better the chance for winning. Line-up begins at 9 a.m., with judging at 9:30 a.m. and the parade starts at 10 a.m. All walkers, bike riders and small motorized vehicles, will line-up on the south end of Liddell Lane. The horses will line-up at the north end of Liddell Lane and all trucks, floats, and larger entries will line-up on Erda Way at the corner of Liddell Lane heading west. The Stansbury High School drama program is holding a summer children’s workshop Aug. 2-13. The workshop will be split for children grades fifth and under which will be Aug. 2-6 and children grades 6-8 will be Aug. 9-13. CASA volunteers
Court appointed special advocate (CASA) volunteers are needed to be an advocate for abused and neglected children assisting as the guardian ad Litem attorney who represents the child’s best interest. No special education or background is necessary. Volunteers are needed for one year to visit with the child at least twice a month for a total of six to eight hours a month. Volunteers must be 21 years or older, pass a BCI and child abuse registry screening and complete training. For more information please contact Mary Lucero at maryal@email.utcourts.gov.
Food/shelter assistance
The Tooele County Emergency Food and Shelter Program assistance to help Tooele County residents in need of one rent/or mortgage payment is now open until all funds are exhausted. Applications will be taken on a first come first serve basis and the funds will be limited monthly to be available for the next three to five months. The qualifications that residents must meet to receive assistance are: payment is in arrears or due within five calendar days; all other resources have been exhausted; crisis must be documented; mortgage assistance is limited to principal and interest only no late fee or other fees are included with this assistance; payment must guarantee an additional 30 days in residence. Each applicant will be pre-screened to determine if they qualify to receive the application. If qualifications are not met, no application will be give. The Tooele Community Resource Center is located at 38 S. Main Street. Start date will be July 1 at 9 a.m. and will be the first Monday of each month until funds are gone.
Food pantry
The First Baptist Church in Tooele is offering an emergency food pantry and clothing closet to meet the needs of our community. Anyone with clothing needs is welcome. The food pantry is available for emergency needs. Hours of operation are Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. We are located at 580 S. Main Street, Tooele. For more information call 882-2048.
Volunteer opportunity
Rocky Mountain Care Foundation, a nonprofit organization is looking for volunteers in Tooele. Our volunteers provide respite care, friendly visits, conversation, light household chores, and other needs to terminally ill patients who are on our hospice services. The Moose Lodge will be sponsoring a poker run on Aug. 21. Proceeds to benefit Arden Allred, husband of Linda Young, who is suffering from cancer. $50 donation to enter. Starting at the Moose Lodge at 11 a.m., from there we’ll hit the following stops: Tracks, All Star Lanes, Elks Lodge, Corner Pocket, Eagles Lodge, J&J’s and then back to the Moose Lodge for dinner. State family picnic
Tooele Eagles will host the State Eagles Family Picnic at the Settlement Canyon pavilion Friday night, Saturday and Sunday morning, July 9-11. Sloppy joes will be on the menu with chips Friday night at 6 p.m. or $4 breakfast will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning for $4 with barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs with salad and chips for lunch for $5. Roast pig dinner with potatoes and corn on the cob will be served for dinner at 6 p.m. for $6. Breakfast will be served at 8 Sunday morning for $4. A meal ticket can be purchased for $15 to cover the meals on Saturday and Sunday. There will be bingo, a raffle and games for the kids on Saturday afternoon. Bring the family up.

Nominations for the office of vice president will be held at the regular meeting of the Aerie on Thursday, July 8 at 8 p.m. If required, election will be held on Thursday, July 15 from noon until 8 p.m.

LaForge Encore Theatre Company is selling the beds that were used in their recent production of “Annie.” The single beds that are 5 feet long and 2 1/2 feet wide are $18 and the bunk beds same size and they’re $25. Relay for Life
Tooele County Relay for Life is looking for more teams to participate in this life-changing event. DUP Jubilee
The Tooele Valley Company of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers will be holding its annual Pioneer Day Jubilee on July 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the historic Benson Grist Mill. There are many displays of how pioneers worked, played and lived. We have hands-on demonstrations, hay rides, pioneer story teller and mini Pony Express run for kids.

A summer day camp for people with disabilities age 12-22 is being sponsored by Girl Scouts of America. It’s open to boys and girls and will be held July 13 and 14. A support group for Alzheimer’s caregivers is open to anyone caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia.
