The top two teams from Region 18 lost in the first round of the 1A state basketball tournament Wednesday in Richfield.

First-place Dugway trailed by only six points at halftime against a strong Tabiona squad which came into the tournament with a 13-3 record. But the Tigers put some distance between them and the Mustangs in the third quarter outscoring Dugway 15-5 and went on to post a 49-34 victory.

Earlier in the day, Monticello blasted Region 18's second-place team Wendover 76-40. The Buckaroos ran away early from the Wildcats building a 21-point lead at halftime.

In the consolation round today Wendover faces Christian Heritage at 10 a.m. and Dugway plays a powerful Whitehorse team at 11:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, the Mustangs trailed 9-8 after one quarter and 25-19 at intermission before things got away from them in the second half.

Only four players scored for Dugway with Morgan Kartchner scoring 12 including one three-pointer. Zack James added 10, Dakota Wollett 8 with one three-pointer and Preston Edwards 4.

Wendover had trouble controlling Monticello center Joseph Weatherford who scored 24 points and gathered in 18 rebounds. Wendover center Victor De Santiago, however, played a strong game for the Wildcats. Jose Rosales added seven points for the Wildcats with Miguel Martinez contributing four. Devin Murphy and Landon Mikesell added three points each while Nestor Luna scored two. Rosales and Mikesell scored three-point baskets.
