According to Sgt. Bob Gutierrez of the Utah Highway Patrol, approximately 350 cyclists were participating in stage one of the Triple Valley Stage Race hosted by Ski Utah Cycling on a 40-mile stretch of SR-196 between I-80 and Dugway Proving Ground when the accident occurred. One group of cyclists got tangled up near milepost 12 sometime between 10:30 and 11 a.m., sending a few to the ground.
Clint Carter suffered head injuries and was airlifted to the hospital as a precaution. Gutierrez said Carter was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Gutierrez said the organization did not have a permit to hold the race on the state road, and UHP was on its way to the area to talk to organizers when the call came in from dispatch.
Carter was later released from the hospital with 11 stitches above his eye and a broken nose.
