Seven hopefuls vie for Miss Tooele County Dairy Princess 2008

Erika Andrews
Seven Tooele County girls are hoping to gain the title of Miss Tooele County Dairy Princess 2008. The Tooele County Dairy Princess Ambassador Pageant is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, at 7 p.m. at the Tooele Senior Citizens Center.

The contestants will be judged on personal interview, dairy knowledge, dairy jingle, physical fitness, evening wear and overall.

The contestants must be at least a junior this year at a Tooele County high school and no older than 23, have never been married, and have never been pregnant. They must have been able to maintain a 2.8 GPA.

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to the princess, and two co-attendants will receive $250. The princess will compete in the state competition in January 2009 for a $2,000 scholarship.

Erika Andrews

Erika, 17, is the daughter of Dennis and Karen Andrews of Tooele. She will be a senior at Tooele High School this fall. Erika has served a humanitarian mission in Peru where she helped build a secondary school, held a health fair, built cement walkways, and held a dentistry and medical clinic. Erika received the Mayor's Community Youth Recognition Award for her humanitarian services. She is a member of the Skills USA, FFA, and a member of the swim and water polo teams where she will serve as captain. She is currently a lifeguard at Raging Waters. Erika plans to attend either Brigham Young University or Utah State University to obtain a degree in horticulture. She volunteers her time at the local food bank and at the nursing home working with and visiting the elderly. Her platform is titled "Dairy the Hercules in Bones and Power of the Ages."

Pamela Mikal Giles

Mikal, 17, will be a senior at Tooele High School. She is the daughter of Jack and Pamela Giles of Tooele. Mikal enjoys dancing, theater, singing, boating and spending time with her family. She was a member of the Tooele High dance company her freshman year and is currently a member of the Tooele High drill team and will serve as secretary her senior year. She is a three-year member of the Tooele High drama club and has been a cast member in three plays. Mikal is currently teaching dance. She has participated in a internship with Mountain Land Physical Therapy. She has taken medical classes to expand her knowledge in the medical field. After graduating, she plans to attend Utah State University to become a registered nurse. Mikal has chosen "Three A Day The Milky Way" as her platform.

Rachel Ann Klein

Rachel, 17, will be a senior at Grantsville High School this fall. She is the daughter of Paul and Kathy Klein of Stansbury Park. Rachel was just elected as senior class president at GHS and will be attending a leadership camp this summer. She has assisted on many job shadows and job fairs over the past two years. She was the assistant for Operation Christmas and collected gifts for the families in need. Rachel is enrolled in a medical assistant program for this fall and will be taking college classes during her senior year. She is interested in criminal investigation, medical evidence and medical procedures. She currently works at a daycare and enjoys her involvement with the children. Rachel has performed at two benefit sign concerts, where the proceeds went to help a community member in need. She has volunteered as a camp counselor for the diabetes day camp and has also been a volunteer for her community for many events. She has chosen "Food Allergies" as her platform.

Erin Murray

Erin, 17, is the daughter of Max and Janae Wahlberg and the late Jason Murray. She will be a senior at Grantsville High School. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends fishing, four-wheeling, listening to country music and participating in FFA. She has been involved with school activities and was secretary her freshman year. She was junior prom chairman. She has been on the dairy food and livestock judging teams with the Future Farmers of America and also served as their chapter historian and vice president. Erin is employed at the Miller Motorsports Park Landscaping. She has helped in the community with Sub for Santa and has also helped the elderly. She teaches third-grade classes about agriculture, eating healthy foods and the FFA. She plans to attend Utah State University and major in agriculture education. She choose "D.I.E.T. (Developing Intelligent Eating Tactics for the Youth)" as her platform.

Chelsey Jayleena Sorenson

Chelsey, 17, will be a senior at Grantsville High School. She is the daughter of Ken and Stina Sorenson of Grantsville. She was a member of the high school softball team, played softball for the recreation team, and was a member of the All Star League as well. Chelsey was a member of the Future Farmers of America. She won first place in a literature contest. She was a member of the junior prom committee and was the hospitality room coordinator. Chelsey completed the state of Utah Certified Nursing Assistant courses and is planning to start classes and complete her degree as a medical assistant. Chelsey plans to continue on to college and obtain her registered nursing degree. She is a member of the Relay for Life committee and team leader of 10. She has chosen "Do You Drink Bone Builder?" as her platform.

Morgan Dawn Stewart

Morgan, 17, will be a senior at Tooele High School this fall. She is the daughter of Roger and Tracie Stewart of Tooele. She would like to attend Utah Valley University or Brigham Young University and obtain a degree in secondary education with an emphasis in political science and history. She is the captain for Tooele High School's debate team. She lettered in student congress debate for three years and also received excellence in the National Forensics League. Megan has been accepted into the Presidential Youth Leadership Committee and the teenage Republicans Organization. She hopes to return to Tooele High School to teach political science, history and debate after graduating from college. Morgan has chosen "Osteoporosis: An Ounce of Prevention Can Save a Life" as her platform.

Janiel Colleen Wells

Janiel, 18, is the daughter of Ronna and Hal Wells of Erda. She recently graduated from Tooele High School where she was a four-year member of the swim team and lettered in swimming three years in a row. She was president of the Skills USA, won fourth place in prepared speech, and was nominated Skills USA student of the year. She rides, shows and trains horses. She is currently involved with Tooele 4-H and is a member of the Erda Rustlers 4-H Club. She is currently employed at the All Star Lanes Bowling Alley. She has volunteered her time planting flowers at the Grantsville Senior Center. Janiel will be attending University of Utah to become an architect. Her platform is "For A Healthier You-Drink Milk! Osteoporosis."
