Cowboys searching for a horse they can look up to will want to be in Tooele this Friday when Radar, the world's tallest living horse, rides into town.
Radar, a brown Belgian draft horse, holds the Guinness World Record for equestrian height, standing 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches at the withers. He also weighs over 2,400 pounds.
Although he is the tallest living horse in the world, Radar is not the largest. In fact, he comes up 800 pounds short in that category, where the record is held by a horse named Brooklyn Supreme.
The tallest horse ever to live was Sampson, towering nearly two hands over Radar. Sampson was born in 1846 in Bedfordshire, England.
Radar was born in Iowa in 1998. He was then purchased by Priefert Ranch Equipment in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, in 2005 to be used in the company's promotional activities. When he's not traveling to make appearances, Radar lives with 19 of the world's other tallest horses in Mt. Pleasant in the Priefert Draft Horse barn. The barn houses the Priefert's Texas Thunder/Percheron Draft Horse Hitch, a group of massive black horses averaging 2,200 pounds each.
Radar's daily diet consists of 18 pounds of grain, 40 pounds of hay and 20 gallons of water.
He has appeared across America while traveling in his custom-made horse trailer. He recently assisted in a demolition for the ABC hit reality show, "Extreme Makeover Home Edition."
Radar will appear at the C-A-L Ranch store in Tooele. The store carries many Priefert products, explained Natalie Allred, assistant manager of C-A-L Ranch.
"I hope the members of this community find this neat and fun," Allred said. "We are going to be selling shirts with Radar on them and giving out free popcorn. We want everyone to come out and have fun."
Radar will be visiting on Friday, Aug. 24, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. at C-A-L Ranch. Pictures are allowed.
