Grantsville has never had a state 4-H competition champion, but now they have two.
Cassie Bahe and Lance Ruby, both members of the Grantsville Outbacks 4-H Club, stole the show last month in the statewide 4-H competition, coming away as all-around winners in their divisions. Both competed against 90-plus contestants from across the state.
Lance, 13, was the high point winner and the only contestant to receive blue ribbons -- the highest honor available -- in all five of the two-handed events (for younger horses, age 5 and under) in the intermediate division, which included showmanship, horsemanship, equitation and trail.
Bahe, 11, dominated in the speed events on Saturday, winning first place in all three of the events -- barrel racing, pole bending and the flag race -- and placing high in horsemanship, reining and on the written test for the junior division.
"We didn't think Cassie had a chance to win the overall competition," said Laurie Bahe, Cassie's mom. "Her horse was nervous and wouldn't hold still during earlier competitions."
The county as a whole took 17 contestants to the competition in Vernal on Sept. 20-22. They ranged in age from 8 to 18 years.
"People were saying, 'My goodness, you sure can tell that Tooele County showed up this year,'" said Martha Ruby, Lance's mom and leader of the Grantsville Outback 4-H Club.
County 4-Hers spend an hour and a half to two hours a day on their horses training for competitions, Martha said. As a club they practice once a week.
"We were so proud of everyone, all of the kids did awesome," Martha said.
Out of the contestants from the county, 13 placed in the top 20 of their events.
"Most of our kids did very well on the written test, which is pretty important," said Martha.
The written test was a 50-question test, which served as a tie-breaker as well as an event. This test shows how well the contestant knows their horse, as well as information about the 4-H program.
Nine contestants from Tooele were among the top 10 scorers in their division for the test.
The contestants who competed from Tooele County in the senior division were Whitney Staker, Julie Tonioli, Jami Huffaker, Star Cassity, Kelsey Stephenson. Those who competed in the junior division were Hannah Pollock, Sierra Allen, Cassie Bahe, Anna Bahe, Jessica Gowans, Mackenzie Brown, Raeann Langston. Those who competed in the intermediate division were Lance Ruby, Brenna DeYoung, Kaitlyn Gowans, Raeann Langston, Alana Zimmerman, Casey Magnum.
