Magic Moment in Racing

The thrilling finish of the inaugural Sunchaser 1000 at Miller Motorsports Park was named the "Rolex Moment of the Year" at the annual awards banquet for the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series in Las Vegas on Sep.17. The inaugural Sunchaser 1000, held on Sept. 2, 2006, featured the first-ever series win by the No. 60 Flight Options/Net App Lexus Riley, fielded by Michael Shank Racing and co-driven by Oswaldo Negri Jr. and Mark Patterson. With just over an hour remaining in the nine-hour race, Negri took the lead when he beat the No. 19 Playboy/Uniden Racing Ford Crawford of Michael McDowell, Memo Gidley and Guy Cosmo off pit road following the final pit stop of the evening for both cars. Negri withstood several challenges from McDowell over the final hour of the race, but managed to keep him at bay to win by 2.94 seconds. Each year, Grand-Am nominates a number of events to be eligible to win the prestigious "Rolex Moment of the Year" award. This year, the eligibility period started with the inaugural Sunchaser 1000 and ended with the Armed Forces 250 at California's Infineon Raceway on Aug.25. Eight "moments" were nominated by Grand-Am officials, and votes were cast on the series' website. The winning "moment" was announced as part of the Champions Banquet held at The Venetian in Las Vegas on Sept. 17, two days after this year's Sunchaser 1000, in which victory went to another first-time-winning team, the No. 91 Riley-Matthews Motorsports Pontiac Riley of Marc Goossens, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Jim Matthews.
