Down by 10 points after three quarters, Dugway High turned it on in the final period to defeat Intermountain Christian School (ICS) 46-42 Tuesday night in Salt Lake City. The win is the seventh-straight for the undefeated Mustangs.
The Lions sprinted out to a commanding 19-4 advantage after one quarter.
"We didn't play well at all in the first quarter and our press finally started to work in the fourth quarter," said Dugway coach George Bruce.
The Mustangs outscored the home team 19-5 in the final stanza thanks to a trapping half-court press.
"I think they (ICS) also got a little tentative in the fourth quarter thinking they had already won the game," Bruce said.
Down by 15 after the first quarter, the Mustangs cut the lead to eight at intermission. But the Lions took time off the clock with a slow-down offense in the third quarter and managed to keep the lead at 10 after three quarters.
Dugway's pressure defense created turnovers in the final quarter and the Mustangs also started to convert some three-point baskets.
"Zach James made a couple of good plays inside in the fourth quarter. He's just been an animal inside," the coach said. "Both teams played pretty hard defensively. It was a hard fought game."
Bruce said that ICS is a strong team which will vie for the top spot in Region 17.
Morgan Kartchner scored 13 points including two three-pointers. Dakota Woollett added 12 and James seven. Preston Edwards scored six with Nathan Lundy and James Dettle scoring two each.
Dugway hosts the Tooele sophomores on Friday night and Manila on Saturday.
