Another fast-moving winter storm buried Tooele Valley in snow and caused dangerous road conditions across the county Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, resulting in numerous slide-offs and other minor accidents.
The National Weather Service reported a storm total of 17 inches of snow in some parts of the Tooele Valley with winds of up to 23 mph in Tooele and 47 mph in Stockton.
The Utah Highway Patrol reported over 30 slide-offs last night alone in Tooele County, and responded to numerous others this morning. Only minor injuries were reported.
UHP Sgt. Troy Marx said SR-199 (Rush Valley to Johnson Pass) was closed Wednesday night and this morning for a couple of hours on both occasions. SR-196 in Skull Valley was also closed for a short time. Both roads were reopened by approximately 9 a.m. today.
"We got hit hard," Marx said.
All schools in the Tooele County School District were closed today, as were Tooele City and Tooele County offices. Grantsville City's offices remained opened.
Tooele County School District Superintendent Mike Johnsen said it was the first time in 20 years that district schools had been closed because of snow.
Paula Nicholson, public information officer for Dugway Proving Ground, said many workers were unable to make the drive into work because of the closures and questionable road conditions. Anyone wanting to find out road conditions to Dugway can call 831-2000.
