The Grantsville High School boys soccer team continues to improve with each match. And fortunately for the Cowboys they have an added weapon this year in senior goalkeeper Steven Sharpe.

The new goalkeeper has led Grantsville to two one-goal victories over 4A opponents Highland and Cyprus.

"He's one of the best goalkeepers I have seen in the last 15 years on the high school level. He could end up playing professionally," said Grantsville coach Chris Holley.

The Cowboys are 2-1 on the season and Sharpe did not play in Grantsville's only loss, a 3-0 defeat to Rowland Hall. Sharpe was nursing an injury, according to the coach.

On Thursday with Grantsville leading 1-0 in the second half against Cyprus, Sharpe guessed correctly on a direct penalty kick to stop the kick short of the net and preserve Grantsville's lead. Later, he flew through the air to the left of the net to snuff out a wide open shot from only about 15 yards out.

Cyprus eventually came back to tie the game, but Grantsville's Scott Holt launched a shot from 30 yards out late in the match which settled in the net out of the reach of the Pirates' goalkeeper to give the Cowboys a 2-1 victory.

Holt already had connected earlier in the match just before the close of the first half. That Grantsville goal came from about 15 yards away.

"We did really well in that match with Cyprus. It was a bit of mass confusion on our part when Cyprus scored. Somebody didn't pick up their player coming in," the coach said.

Other than that lone Cyprus goal there were very few complaints from the head coach as his team prepares for a region match at home today against Bear River and a non-region match at home against Carbon on Wednesday.

"We had a light practice on Friday and a light practice tonight (Monday) getting ready for our region game tommorrow," Holley said.

In the first match of the season Grantsville surprised the Highland Rams 2-1 thanks to another outstanding effort from Sharpe and some onsides trapping defense to stymie the speed of the Highland players.

Grantsville's Jackson Kelley found the back of the net twice in that game to lead the offensive punch for the Cowboys.

The T-Birds scored four goals in the first half and one in the second to defeat Tooele 5-0 in soccer Thursday in Provo. The Buffs play at Orem today and host Mountain View on Thursday at 4 p.m.
