On Monday, the State Charter School Board approved the application for the school. Final approval or rejection will come next month at the State School Board meeting on May 9.
The State Charter School Board approved seven new schools and expansions at nine existing new schools to increase charter school enrollment statewide by 7,216 students, just below the 7,300 growth limit set by the state Legislature.
Excelsior Academy is one of the seven new schools that the State Charter School Board will recommend that the State School Board approve at its meeting in May. Other new charter schools that the board approved on Monday include a statewide on-line high school, two new charter schools in the Jordan School District and charter schools in South Salt Lake, St. George, and Davis county.
Charter schools are publicly funded schools that operate independent of the local school district. They charge no tuition and are open to all students.
Excelsior Academy, if approved, will open in the fall of 2009, and will serve students in kindergarten through eighth-grade.
