The 17-year-old boy was playing with the gun in a basement bedroom of his family's home on Campbell Road, according to Detective Brad Patch of the Tooele County Sheriff's Office. He didn't realize the gun was loaded and as he was spinning it around on his finger it went off.
Patch said the teen's injuries were not life-threatening.
The incident was the second accidental shooting in less than two weeks in Tooele County. The first occurred June 7 at a Rush Valley home when a man accidentally fired a .45 caliber handgun and killed an acquaintance. (See story on A1.)
Patch said gun owners should always ensure that all precautions are taken to prevent these types of accidents from occurring -- particularly by not storing guns loaded.
"Remember guns aren't toys. Keep them locked up," Patch said. "You can never be too safe."
