The Grantsville City Council recently adopted a $10.4 million budget for the 2008-09 year.

Unlike Tooele City, Grantsville does not plan to dip into reserves to balance the budget, nor will it follow Tooele City officials’ lead in declining pay increases. In fact, the Grantsville budget includes a 4 percent cost-of-living increase for all city employees plus 3 percent step increases.

The Grantsville City Police Department was one of several departments that saw a budget increase from last year, going up 14 percent to $1.2 million for 2008-09. Grantsville City Police Chief Dan Johnson said the increase will allow him to add an officer to keep up with increasing calls for service.

“We need a new police officer on staff because we have had 600 more calls for service for this year at this time than we did for this time last year,” Johnson said. “Our new officer will also require more money in fuel and maintenance costs. In addition to the new officer, the increased budget will also cover higher fuel costs overall, new data phones for our department, and two new police cars, one of which will be used by the new officer.”

Several other city departments saw budget increases. A total of $741,000 was allocated for the Class C road department — which is used to keep the city’s roads drivable and well-maintained — up from only $169,000 last year. The almost $600,000 increase is due to restricted funds from the department being unused, which left it with additional funds this year.

The Grantsville Volunteer Fire Department will get an increase of 32 percent — from $350,000 last fiscal year to $460,400 this year. The city court will see its allocation rise 12 percent to $250,966.

The 2008-09 budget also includes increased funding for capital works projects. One of these is for the water capital project, which went from a budget of $300,000 to $404,500. The increase was primarily for the redrilling of city well No. 2, as well as upgrading of the well and hydrant replacement.

Another major budget increase was for the capital outlay of the city’s sewer plant, which went from a budget of only $225,000 for 07-08, to a total of $1.5 million for 08-09. Expenses for the plant would include the updating and refurbishing of equipment. The entire project is expected to cost $2 million.

Red Dog.. How many fire trucks does this town really need? I'm sure it's worth our money to have Broadbent and Fire Marshal Marshal to have their own F150 and F350 trucks that I see in the wal-mart parking lot hauling their families around town. We don't need all of this equipment. Sometimes I think the fire department needs to remember that they're volunteer not full time firemen. I would hope the station is nice for all the money the city spent on it. "doya' made some great points.. I sure wished the city would pull their heads out..

Chief Johnson hasn't done squat accept want more salary..

I think the most amazing things to me, are #1: Why are we a city? We are not big enough, our taxes are ridiculous, and obviously mis-spent? #2: Why not a rec center?? Why not a swimming pool?? It just amazes me.

These are the kind of things that are community builders, and yet, here we go paying for more police cars and officers, and overpaying the city employees, which are not the most "customer oriented" people that I have ever had the pleasure of contacting.

Bottom line is we could be utilizing the county for police services, saving us a ton of money and getting somethings that would really make a positive impact on the community.

To those of you who have questions about the fire department, come on down on 4th of July before the parade and take a look around. The large budget increase included the building payment. I myself do not know why the station is so tall. It is only one story, and unfortunately, there is no pole.

In case you are wondering why it is so big, we have a lot of equipment in this new station that we were unable to fit into the old one. This allows us to keep it ready to go, instead of in the back lot. The size also allows us to train inside during the winter months, something we had a hard time doing before. The facility is also used as a community center of sorts. The meet Santa function was held there last Christmas, there are many hunter safety classes, as well as other functions there. Again, you are invited to come on down and take a look on the 4th.

Also, Chief Johnson has done and excellent job of protecting this city. While there are problem issues, he and his staff do very well at keeping them under control.

Your probably right. But there are plenty more important things to do with the money. Removing the weeds and gravel with concrete isnt going to have much of an impact on the community.

I like you kid.. It has nothing to do with change. It's all about taking proud in what you have and wanting your town to look nice. Weeds that are taller than your car and gravel on every flipping intersection isn't nice.

I completely agree with you on the police chief and the fact that they are wasting money. I do believe we needed a new fire station, but come on 2 stories? Do they really need a pole to slide down? But I'm tired of people wanting to change the image of Grantsville, I really do like the way it looks. A rec center is a must.

Well, I'm glad we agree on the city employees. Please tell me that you feel that same way about our lovely police chief that whines about not making enough money every year and that he needs more police officers on patrol. So you're telling me that you don't want the city to look nice along with city programs? The point I'm trying to make is, they're wasting money every year on the new fire station and new employees. Build a new rec center and generate money so we can have a nice city and things to do for a children..

17 years. Since I was born. And my family has been in the valey since 1860. And for your information... I do have a sidewalk and curb and gutter in front of my house. And I hate it. And thanks for the stereotype of Hicks in trailers. Its great. Yeah, I really don't like the city employees either. But I do believe instead of spending it on Curbs and gutters, to spend it on things like Programs for the kids, like the boys and girls club, or a rec center, cause to many kids get caught in Bad things when their young, because of a lack of activities. And yes, I often wonder why our police officers have Brand New Dodge Chargers to look pretty in the parking lots of way station and soelbergs. I've even seen them behind the way station just talking.........

Bubba, you crack me up! Not sure how long you have lived in g-ville? When they built the middle school they didn't have sidewalks going down Hale street or on Durfee on the Southside. Now they do, until you hit Park Street. Have no idea why they stopped? You have to ask yourself what looks better gravel or sidewalk. I'm sure it doesn't make a difference make to you because you have gravel all around you down in Indian Hills Trailer Court.. The city keeps telling us they don't have enough money for certain projects but everyone down at the city makes over $50k per year. I'm sure we could find people to fill those jobs for half the pay and run it better..

mrbubba, Hick is good, but the Stanbury Park South Grantsville Willow Farms on Main Street Without Curb and Gutter Estates has a pretty good ring to it, ya think?

You love me! I know you do.

Well, I slept a while last night yes. I love Grantsvilles image. Notice: South Willow estates, doesnt look any different from Stansbury Park. Why? It has that clean rich feeling cause of the curb, and gutter, and all those expensize features. I love the look of Grantsville. Its unique. It gives Grantsville the proud image that we have always held. It is a hick town. The farms on main street say that. Put a curb in front of them, it will look like a hick town trying to find class. Not gonna work.

We can't afford a street sweeper to clean off all the gravel on the sides of the roads?? And please don't tell me to move back to the city. I've lived here for over 30 years. Just because it's a small town doesn't mean we can't have a clean image..How can the people take proud in their own yards, when the city doesn't care.

I have always loved being in Tooele, Utah. It may seem like a hick town to some, and others a red-neck city, but never-the-less, it is a family community! I have met the most wonderful people there, and although I now live in Missouri, I am still in contact with a few people there. The one person I am still missing is a wonderful woman named Sherrie Bonelli. Where-ever you are "mom" know that I am searching for you and I miss you terribly! I love you so much!!!!!

Motto33, Typical infantile response from a fellow hick. When you save all your money from collecting pop bottles, aluminum cans, selling eggs and revenue from the lemonade stand, then you can buy the town and do what you want. Until then, please go clean the stable, its starting to stink like your days of 1847 attitude.

Bubba55, Don't your ever sleep?

I learned to parallel park in high school. I love Grantsville, I spent most of my life working on my cousins farm, besides it makes Tooele look good. (only kidding and having a little rival fun)

I can see why we need curb and gutter on most the main streets. Basically just main street and by the schools and parks. But everywhere else is fine. I love our wide roads where we can park perpendicular to the road. It saves a lot of hassle and was how grantsville was set up.

ANd by the way, "Welcome to tooele, You can bowl... thats about it."
