The Tooele County Chamber of Commerce and the Tooele County Board of Realtors sponsored a special meeting on the morning of Tuesday, June 17, at the Tooele City Hall. This event hosted Derek B. Miller, managing director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development — Corporate Recruitment and Incentives. It was an informative experience listening to Miller present the economic indicators and statistics for Tooele County and the state. In addition, lively and positive discussions ensued amongst key community members from our County Commissioners office, the mayor’s office, and influential members of our educational, civic, medical, energy, banking and corporate communities. It was very encouraging to see over 150 people, concerned about our county’s economic health crowding the meeting room, listening and sharing facts, ideas and concerns with a key member of the Utah Governor’s office. A slight taint to the overall successful get-together was a glaring omission from the attendance. Nicole Cline, Tooele County’s economic development advisor, did not attend and a representative from the County Commissioners’ office could not explain Cline’s absence. No matter how one feels about growth, it’s hard to not want managed, coordinated, development, and it just seems to me that those most connected with development efforts should be interested in hearing what a person as influential as Miller has to say. The participation of the concerned and dedicated people of this community is extremely inspiring and demonstrates the commitment our community, civic and business leaders have to the Tooele Valley.
